How Would You Photograph a Fashion Show?

Posted in Reader Questions on February 22nd, 2009 by Darren Rowse

fashion-show-photography.jpg“I’ve been asked to represent a fashion website as their photographer at a fashion show next month in Australia and while I’ve done a lot of portrait style photography I’ve never covered an event like this. Do you or your readers have any advice for this aspiring fashion photographer?” - Alex

This email hit my inbox during the week and I thought it’d make an interesting reader discussion/workshop.

What advice would you give Alex? Alex tells me that she shoots with a single camera body - a Canon EOS 5D and has three lenses that she can choose from - a 24-105mm f/4 L, a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L.

  • Which lens/lenses should she take?
  • How would you recommend she use them?
  • What shots should be go after?
  • What other fashion photography advice or tips would you give?

What is Your Favorite Landscape Location?

Posted in Landscape Photography, Landscapes, Reader Questions on February 1st, 2009 by Darren Rowse

Readers of our community come from all parts of the globe so I thought it might be fun on this weekend to share some of our favorite locations for landscape photography.

In comments below I’d love to hear you share:

  1. Your favorite Landscape Location
  2. A link (on Flickr or some other photo sharing site or perhaps even your photoblog) to a picture taken in this location
  3. The reason you love the location and any tips for others who might like to go there to take a shot

Hopefully this exercise will highlight some great photos but possibly even give some of us inspiration to try some new spots recommended by other DPS readers in our area.

Do You Take a Digital Camera With You Everywhere? [POLL]

Posted in Poll, Reader Questions, polls on January 29th, 2009 by Darren Rowse

This week’s reader poll picks up on some of the discussion we’ve had here recently about improving your photography by taking your camera with you everywhere you can.

I’m interested to see if people do. Here’s the poll:

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Of course all of these answers won’t quite fit with everyone’s style and situation - so pick the closest one to your situation and then tell us about your answer in more detail in comments below.

How Would You Photograph a Funeral?

Funeral Photography

How would you photograph a funeral? Yesterday I received the following question email from Mandy, a DPS reader. I thought that together we’d probably answer it better than I would alone.

“This week a close friend of our family passed away suddenly. His family know that I’m a keen (hobby) photographer and called last night to see if I would be able to photograph the funeral to capture the service for the benefit of other family members who are overseas. I said yes - but I’m terrified. I’ve never photographed a wedding let alone a funeral - do you or any of your readers have any tips for me? The funeral is on Monday.”

Any tips on how to photograph this funeral that you can offer Mandy would be greatly appreciated.

What’s On Your Background?

Posted in Reader Questions on January 17th, 2009 by Peter Carey

Capital One’s popular tag line is, “What’s in your wallet?” and that got me thinking. And thinking has lead to this post. My question is simple and two fold.

  1. What’s on your background on your computer?
  2. Why is it there?

I’ll start things off with the current background image on my travel laptop.

Macaw in Flight

And as for why it’s there…..I took this picture while on a recent trip to Peru. I had never seen macaws in the wild before and the vivid colors of their feathers against the green canopy of the rainforest amazed me. Being able to capture this one in flight (as well as having it positioned in the frame so it doesn’t interfere with other desktop icons) is a reminder of that trip and my sense of wonder that I hope to never lose.

Ok, it’s your turn! Post a link to your background picture in the comments section below and then let us know why it’s there.
